b. 135-137

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

No marks in AF (→FEEE)

Staccato dots in GE

..

The missing staccato dots on the 2nd and 3rd beats of b. 135 and 137 are most probably an inaccuracy of AF (→FEEE) – cf. b. 11 and 103. The oversight of these marks could have provoked a manifest slurring error – see the note in the next bar.

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

2nd quaver without f2 in AsI & FE

Chord with f2 in A (→GEEE,FESB)

..

The version without f2, introduced – most probably by Chopin – at the stage of proofreading FE, is also a version that was entered into AsI, in which the note was also removed (deleted, like f in the L.H. on the same quaver). Therefore, if the correction to AsI preceded the preparation of A, we are dealing with Chopin's hesitation, who changed his mind on the presence of this note three times. Another possibility would be the initial version having been erroneously entered into A.

No slur in A (→GEFE,FESB,EE1EE2)

Slur in b. 135 in EE3

Slur to b. 136 suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we suggest adding a slur after the authentic solo part slurs. Cf. also the L.H. slurs in the version for one piano in b. 136-137 and 137-138. The slur added in EE3 was modelled on the L.H. slur of the solo part, inaccurately reproduced by EE1 (→EE2).

b. 135-136

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

Slur to b. 136 in A (→GEFE,FESB)

Slur in b. 135 in EE

..

In EE the L.H. slur is poorly imprinted, as a result of which it ends abruptly under the last demisemiquaver in b. 135. The shape of the slur clearly reveals that the shorter slur was neither intended nor erroneous – it was supposed to end over the wedge under the 1st demisemiquaver in b. 136; however, due to a printing defect, one can see only its left half.

Our suggestion

..

In A (→GEFE,FESB), the note on the ways to use the alternative L.H. part is in French, whereby in FE it was shortened by one word, perhaps due to typographic reasons. In the main text we provide its Polish and English versions.
An English version of the note – in a different wording than in the main text – is also in EE; what is more, it is not placed as a footnote, but before the beginning of the additional stave.

The note is absent in AsI, as are the other performance markings
