b. 7

composition: Op. 26 No 1, Polonaise in C♯ minor

No staccato dot in FE (→EE) & GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

Staccato dot in A & GE1

..

The missing staccato dot in FE, placed in A over the 1st quaver of the triplet, can be a result of Chopin's proofreading. The appearance of the dot in GE1 may be explained with the engraver's distraction, whereas a relevant correction was introduced in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5).

b. 7-8

composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor

..

In GE1, probably as a result of an error, the 2nd beat of bar 7 and the entire bar 8 are written without staccato dots. In the subsequent GE, most likely in order to unify all occurrences of this fragment, the dots on the 3rd beat of bar 7 were also removed. Cf. bars 111-112.

composition: Op. 25 No 7, Etude in C♯ minor

Literal reading of slurs in GC (→GE1)

Possible interpretation of slurs in GC, and slur in FE & GE2 (→GE3)

Slurs in EE

..

The slurring of EE is the original state, corrected by Chopin at the stage of manuscripts only in GC. The accurate sense of this correction is not clear (GE1 interpreted the slurs literally as non-connected), yet Chopin proofreading of FE dissipates the doubts concerning the composer's intention. Cf. analogous bars 50-51.

b. 7

composition: Op. 25 No 7, Etude in C♯ minor

No grace note in GC (→GE), FE & EE

Grace note in FED

Our variant suggestion

..

The grace note indicating the manner of beginning the trill – from the top note – was written by Chopin in FED. Similarly in analogous bar 51.

b. 7

composition: Op. 26 No 1, Polonaise in C♯ minor

Quaver in A

Crotchet in FE (→GE1,EE), 1st instance only

Crotchet in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

..

Chopin added a crotchet stem in the L.H. to the g quaver in the proofreading of FE1. The absence of this correction in the analogous bar in the written repetition in the editions most probably results from Chopin's oversight. We directly include this minor improvement in the main text, which corresponds to both analogous bars in the first editions. An addition was respectively performed in the bar being a repetition of bar 7 also in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5).
