b. 59

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

Crotchets in A (→GEFE)

Crotchets in EE (without the second slur)

Quavers entered in FES

Quavers and a slur in FED

..

In the main text we give the version written into FES and FED. The remaining sources have the version as in bar 3 and analogous bars. That type of adding variety to the melodic line is very characteristic of Chopin. He introduced similar changes, also as later corrections, in Mazurka in C major no. 2, bars 102-103, and also in other works.

b. 59-71

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

..

In bars 59, 63, 67 (R.H.) and 71 (L.H.) in A there are traces of deleting the dot extending the crotchet on the 2nd beat of the bar and the quaver flag at the last note of the bar. However, the spatial arrangement  of those notes within the bar shows that the initial version of the rhythm was just like the final version – 2 quavers and 2 crotchets. It seems that in the course of his work on A Chopin twice changed his mind about the rhythm in those bars:

b. 59

composition: Op. 28 No. 15, Prelude in D♭ major

..

In A one can see that sharps were crossed out before the outer notes of the R.H. chord. The version with a G major chord seems to be shocking here; perhaps Chopin wrote the accidentals by mistake believing that a new phrase follows immediately the section written down in an abridged manner.

b. 60

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

e2 in CLI

e2 in FE (→GE,EE

..

According to us, e2 in CLI is rather the original version of this place than a simple oversight of a . It is proved by other more schematic versions in CLI, as, e.g., in bar 64, in which a mechanical error seems to be unlikely.
