Issues : Cautionary accidentals

b. 16-17

composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor

..

In the main text we omit the cautionary flats, present in the sources, next to c3 in the R.H. (in A in bar 17 before both notes; similarly in bar 18). It is an obvious example of Chopin's insecurity concerning the issue of presence of particular accidentals in the key signature. Cf. the note on c2 in the L.H. in bar 17.

b. 16

composition: Op. 25 No 11, Etude in A minor

..

Before the 1st semiquaver of the last group, GC and FE have no accidental, which, due to the fact that 11 previous notes in the R.H. (together with d1) were written on the bottom stave, is only an inaccuracy. GE1 added a  before this note. In turn, the absence of this sign in EE1 (→EE2) and GE2 (→GE3) is a mistake, as in these editions – same as in mUltimate Chopin – the entire part of the R.H. is written in this bar on the top stave.

GC (→GE1) and FE repeated the  before b, the 2nd semiquaver of the last group. The unnecessary in this context sign was removed in EE and GE2 (→GE3).

b. 16

composition: Op. 50 No. 2, Mazurka in A♭ major

..

In the main text we add cautionary flats before e2 and e1. The latter was already added in the proofreading of FE (→EE), although one cannot be certain whether such additions come from Chopin.

b. 16-17

composition: Op. 28 No. 8, Prelude in F♯ minor

..

In b. 16-17 the sources feature cautionary naturals before d1 in the middle of the bar. According to us, a similar accidental in analog. b. 15 is enough to avoid possible doubts concerning the sound of those notes; therefore, we omit these naturals in the main text.

b. 16

composition: Op. 2, Variation IV, primitive version

..

Both manuscripts are missing a few necessary accidentals in this bar – a  to g2 and naturals to g2, d1 and g1. In addition, in AsI the  to d2 is missing. On the other hand, in A there is an unjustified  to c1 in the last L.H. figure. The latter and both accidentals written in A to the topmost R.H. notes are placed much lower than the noteheads they concern.
