b. 73

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

In GC the part of the R.H. is written in this bar one octave lower, as the copyist forgot to end the octave sign in the new line of the text. All the remaining sources include the correct text.

Slurs in GC (literal reading→GE1)

Slurs in GC, contextual interpretation

Slurs in FE

Slur in EE & GE2 (→GE3)

..

When interpreted literally, the short slurs of GC (→GE1) are almost certainly erroneous due to the breaking of the slur between bars 73-74, contrary to the construction of the phrase. The suggested interpretation is based on the original slurring of analogous bars 55-57, in which Chopin combined the one-bar slurs in bars 55-56, written initially in GC. The phrasing may be considered as alternative with respect to the main text, based on FE and compatible with the slurring of analogous bars 54-57. The continuous slur in GE2 (→GE3) is a result of an arbitrary revision, yet the same slur in EE may be authentic.

b. 75-89

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

In bars 75, 78-79, 81-87 and 89 in GC minims in the R.H. have no augmenting dots. That inaccuracy of notation can sometimes be found in Chopin's writing, yet in this instance it is definitely the copyist's error.

b. 76

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

GC (→GE)

FE1 (→FE2)

..

According to us, the first half of the bar has only one authentic version, written in [A] and conveyed by EE and FESch. The versions of GC and FE1, hence sources based on [A], were probably a result of its misinterpretation by the copyist and the engraver of FE. Chopin restored the correct text, by amending the mistake in FE2 and FESch and – most probably – in the base text to EE. The versions of FE3 and FE4 are most probably a result of mistakes at the time of proofreading FE2 and FE3 respectively.

The  sign, written in the sources before the E1-E octave, was most probably supposed to conern the aforementioned octave (Chopin would often write the pedal's press sign before a low placed note). The notation of FE could be interpreted in such a way, however, in the remaining sources the  sign is clearly placed under the chord on the 2nd beat of the bar and not before the last octave. In the main text we correct this highly likely misunderstanding).
