b.

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

g3 in A

c4 in FE1

b3 in FE2, GE & EE

..

The version of A is most probably a Terzverschreibung, which would often happen to Chopin with a larger number of ledger lines – cf., e.g. the Polonaise in C minor, Op. 26 No. 1, b. 5 or the Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, II mov., b. 83. Chopin corrected it twice while proofreading FEFE1 includes c4, and it is only just FE2 and the remaining editions that include b3.

b.

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In the L.H. part, Chopin omitted a few necessary accidentals in AsI and A – a  to band a  to f in bar 327 (yet he wrote a cautionary  to e1) and a  to e2 at the end of bar 328. In GE1 (→GE2,EE1) only the latter was added. In FE and EE2 (→EE3) a  to b was also added, while in FESB – a  to f. All necessary accidentals are present only in GE3. Moreover, in EE2 (→EE3) the  to e1 was repeated before the last quaver in the L.H. bottom voice in bar 328.

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

in FC (→GE)

No indication in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

As in bar 1, the  indication could have been added to FC by Chopin or removed in the stage of proofreading FE or in [A] after the copy had already been prepared. Due to the above, in the main text we suggest a variant solution.

b. 0-4

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

..

In the majority of the sources, there are two slurs within bars 1-4: the first one spanning bars 1-2, the second - bars 3-4. The beginnings and endings of the slurs were written imprecisely. AR includes one slur spanning bars 1-4. In CY, the absence of the second slur, within bars 3-4, may be considered a copying inaccuracy. Due to the repetition of the cnote at the beginning of the Waltz in AE (→CX) and CC, the first slur begins in the upbeat. A similar situation occurs in CY, however, due to the upbeat, we put the beginning of the slur in the 1st bar, contrary to the notation of the copy.
