Issues : Annotations in FEJ

b. 218-219

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

..

In both bars in FE0 (→FE,FEG) there is not any  lowering g3(2) to g3(2). The flats in bars 217 and 220 prove Chopin's oversights, probably still in [A]. Some of the necessary signs were added in pencil by the composer in FED (both before g3) and in FEJ (at the beginning of bar 219). They were also added in GE and EE (the sign in bar 218 only in GE2 and GE3).

b. 256

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

g2 in FE0 (→EE)

f2 in FE & GE

..

The version of FE0 (→EE) with g2 as the bottom note of the first of the pairs of the quavers is most probably erroneous. In the base text to FE and in FEG (→GE) Chopin changed this g2 to f2, yet in FE the correction was misunderstood, hence the flat was also copied, which resulted in a f2. Chopin corrected this new error in FEJ. In this situation, the presence of the original version in EE must be considered as a result of an oversight of proofreading or the engraver's inattention. In the main text we give the text written by Chopin's hand in FEG and FEJ.

b. 282-283

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No all'ottava sign in EE, GC (→GE) & FE2

All'ottava sign continued in FE1

..

In FE1 the octave sign ends as late as bar 283. The error was corrected in FEJ and FES, and also in FE2.

b. 482

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

..

FE has a  before the 6th quaver, which results in g3, impossible in this harmonic context. The mistake was corrected both in GE and EE; it was marked also in FEJ.

b. 555

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

e2 in FE

e2 in GE, EE & FEJ

..

The sharp before the last semiquaver in FE is almost certainly a mistake – it is proved by comparison with analogous bar 196, 200 and 551, supported by deletion of the unnecessary accidental in FEJ. The awkward e2-d2 sequence, omitting the chordal e2, drew the attention of both the revisers of GE and EE. The traces of corrections visible in FE prove that the discussed note was corrected from d2 to e2, which allows us, to a certain extent, understand the mechanism of the mistake – the proofreading was definitely aimed at e2, yet along with a notehead, the engraver erroneously moved also the  (cf. the Sonata in B Minor, Op. 35, 3rd mov., bar 20).
