Issues : Cautionary accidentals

b. 500-504

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In the main text we add cautionary sharps before f2 in b. 500 and 502 and f1 in b. 504. In b. 502 Chopin started writing a  in A, yet he quickly abandoned it and crossed out the germ of that accidental. The accidentals were gradually added in GE: in b. 500 already in GE1, while in the remaining ones – in GE2 (→GE3). The sharp in b. 500 was added also in FESf.

b. 501-503

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In the main text we add a cautionary  before b2 in b. 501. In A one can see that Chopin crossed out that accidental; however, he inserted a  before b1 in an analogous situation in b. 505. The accidental was added also in EE and GE2 (→GE3). Moreover, we remove the poorly justified  before b on the 3rd beat of b. 503, present in all sources. In this context Chopin was also inconsistent, since he did not write a  in b. 501.

b. 504-508

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

In A Chopin wrote naturals before the last note in the bar in four places – e and e1 in bar 504, E in bar 505 and e3 in bar 508. Not only did GE1 repeated these signs, but it also added corresponding naturals in the R.H. in bars 505 and in the L.H. in bar 508. The unnecessary signs were removed in FE (→EE) and partially also in GE2 (only in bar 508).

b. 516

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

..

In the main text, we omit the cautionary  before c3, present in all sources except GE3. In the same group of sources, there is no  before d2, which we do not consider a mistake, since the first part of the roulade is written there with the use of an octave sign, so that the  before the 2nd semiquaver may be considered valid also here.

b. 521-522

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

A (→FCGE1) includes a cautionary  before the lowest note of the 1st chord, a, in both bars. FE (→EE) and GE2 (→GE3) omitted that  in b. 522. In the main text we do not include any of those unjustified accidentals.
