The slur A (interpretation in context)

The slur of GE (→FEEE)

..

When read literally, the slur of A  ends over the semiquaver f2. In our opinion, the phrasing aspect of that slur is an argument that points to its inaccurate notation. For our main text we assume the slur reaching the 2nd beat of bar 10, as Chopin clearly wrote two bars earlier. In GE (→FEEE) the slur ends even earlier, which is surely not implied by the notation of A.

A longer slur in AI

Slur in AI without a "triplet" slur

Slurs in A, literal reading

Slurs in A (→GE2), contextual interpretation

GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The first slur, encompassing the triplet, is written inaccurately in A, patently shifted to the left. This resulted in its earlier beginnig in GE1 (→FEEE). The correct interpretation of the sign, in keeping with the analogous bars 5-6 as well as 29-30 and 33-34, was introduced in GE2.

AI has different slurs here, as in bars 5-6. We propose the longer one as an alternative to the slurring in A.

b. 9-16

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

..

We give the slurring of the figures in the L.H. in bars 9-10, 15 and similar in the entire Etude only in the standardised version, despite the fact that some of the slurs are inaccurately written. The regularity of the texture and a great number of repetitions of similar figures deny the intentionality of considering these minor divergences in transcriptions. Cf. the remark concerning dynamic hairpins.

Two slurs in A, contextual interpretation

One slur in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Two slurs in A are clearly shorter than their counterparts in bars 1-2, however, there is no doubt that it is a result of a less careful notation. In FE (→GE,EE) it was understood in the same way, yet only the second slur, in bar 10, was reproduced. See bars 1-4.

Less likely reading of slurs in AT

More likely reading of slurs in AT

Slur in AW, CDP, GC (→GE), FE & EE

..

The slurs in bars 9-10 in AT may be interpreted in two ways. According to us, the divided slurs are much more likely here – while drawing the slur over bar 9, Chopin dragged the line too far, broke it and entered a new slur from the beginning of bar 10 (a similar situation occurred with the previous slur, starting from bar 7 and whose ending in bar 8 was, however, marked more clearly).
