Issues : Inaccurate slurs in A

b. 1-4

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

Four slurs in A

Two slurs in FE (→EE2)

Two slurs in GE1

Three slurs in GE2 (→GE3)

Three slurs in GE4 (→GE5)

Three slurs in EE3 (→EE4)

..

Each of four slurs in the L.H. written in A embraces the entire bar, despite the fact that due to the inconvenient graphic layout, the notation is not always precise. In FE (→EE2) only two out of them were recreated, in bars 2-3. Similarly in GE1, in which the slur in bar 3 is led only to the penultimate note, a (this inaccuracy was corrected only in GE4 and GE5). In later GE and EE a slur was added in bar 1. In the main text we give all slurs of A, as an intentional omission of some of them in FE is highly unlikely. Cf. bars 9-10.

Slurs in A

No slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The inaccurate and unclear slurs of A were ignored in FE (→GE,EE). Their range, particularly in the case of bar 3, is uncertain. We do not include them in the main text, as Chopin did not repeat them in A and in analogous bars 10-11 and 42-43, nor did he add them in a proofreading of FE (cf. bars 47-49).

Two slurs in A, contextual interpretation

One slur in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Two slurs in A are clearly shorter than their counterparts in bars 1-2, however, there is no doubt that it is a result of a less careful notation. In FE (→GE,EE) it was understood in the same way, yet only the second slur, in bar 10, was reproduced. See bars 1-4.

Literal reading of slur in A (→FE)

Possible interpretation of A & slur in GE & EE

Interpretation of A suggested by the editors

..

The slur of A in bar 39 unanimously suggests a continuation, which is, however, not confirmed in bar 40, on a new page, where the slur is missing. In FE the slur was correctly reproduced in terms of graphics, yet it is hard to assume that Chopin had such a slur in mind. Both in GE and EE the slur was extended in such a way to dissipate the doubts concerning its scope. We suggest a different interpretation.

Slur in A, interpretation

No slur in FE (→GE,EE2)

Slur in EE3 (→EE4)

..

The vague mark in A may be interpreted as a slur. It seems that Chopin went out of ink at the time of writing, however, he did not take care of a discernible notation in A, nor did he add the slur while proofreading FE. Therefore, we do not include this mark in the main text. In EE3 (→EE4) a whole-bar long slur was added under the semiquavers.
