b. 17

composition: Op. 28 No. 16, Prelude in B♭ minor

f in chord in A (→FEEE)

e in FC (→GE)

..

The second note from the bottom of the L.H. chord was written in FC imprecisely, hence it looks more like e rather than f.

b. 17-18

composition: Op. 30 No. 2, Mazurka in B minor

after 3rd beat in FC (→GE)

before 3rd beat in FE (→EE)

..

The pedalling of FC (→GE) must be inaccurate, as it was the case with bar 7. It is particularly obvious in bar 18, in which such long pedal leads to an awkward step in the next bar: an F-f diminished octave to e. Therefore, in the main text we give the more careful version of FE (→EE).

b. 18-20

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Long accents in A (→FE)

Different accents in FC

Short accents in GE & EE

..

It was only the first of the three undoubtedly long accents of A that was reproduced as long in FC. In GE the marks were unified as short accents. Short accents, contrary to FE, are also given in EE.

b. 19-23

composition: Op. 28 No. 21, Prelude in B♭ major

..

In A Chopin overlooked a few necessary flats in the R.H. part: in b. 19 d2, in b. 21 d3 and g2, in b. 22 d2 and d3. FC added only the first  in b. 21; in addition, the copyist overlooked the  of g2 in b. 23. FE also added only some of the necessary flats, next to d2(3) in b. 21-22, and – which is puzzling – also overlooked the  of g2 in b. 23. GE and EE added all necessary accidentals.

b. 20

composition: Op. 43, Tarantella

AFC3 (→FEIE)

..

In GE the slur begins as late as on the second beat of the bar. This is an inaccuracy, which results most probably from unclear notation of slurs in the Fontana copy serving as the basis for this edition (in FC3 b. 20 is the first bar of the system, it is posssible [KF1] had a similar structure). In the main text we adopt notation of A as it raises no doubts.
