3   pairs in A

4 pairs in FC (→GE)

No markings in FE1

3 pairs in FE2 (→EE)

..

In FC (→GE), Fontana wrote one pair of signs ( ) more than in A – most probably a mistake. The absence of pedalling in FE1 is undoubtedly an oversight by the engraver. The markings were added in FE2 (→EE), however, the notation of A was not exactly reproduced.

In the final part of the roulade (starting from c2), there are no accidentals in A (→FE). The patent inaccuracy was corrected in FC (→GE) and EE by adding the necessary naturals before b2 and b3.

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

..

In A (→FE) there are only 3 flats before the 1st chord – e2c2 in the R.H. and a1 in the L.H. In FC and EE1 lowering c1 to c1 and a cautionary one before a were added, while in GE and EE2 a cautionary  before e1 was also added.
The necessary  lowering c1 to c1 was added in FED.

Small crotchet in A (→FEEE)

Slashed quaver in FC (→GE)

..

The change of the form of grace notes is a typical mannerism of Fontana. In this case, the Chopinesque grace note in the form of a small crotchet is almost certainly an appoggiatura, hence replacing it with a slashed quaver is contrary to Chopin's intention. In the main text we give a trill with a wavy line, although Chopin wrote only  in A. The Chopinesque trills are written down with or without wavy lines, which does not influence the performance in the case of an ornament with a written-out ending. It is difficult to say what the motivation of Fontana was when he was adding a wavy line after the  mark and of the engraver of GE when he was omitting that element.
