FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: M. Schlesinger
Date: XII 1835
Title: Quatre Mazurkas || No 3. | Mazurka
Dedication: Monsieur le Comte de Perthuis

In the FE of the Mazurkas Op. 24 no impressions differing in the musical text have been detected. Still, we need to mention that no copy has been found of the album containing, among other pieces, Chopin's Opus 24 published in December 1835 (we know about the existence of that album from a press announcement). The earliest known copies of FE1, including the one presented here, date back to January 1836 and bear traces of corrections made in print. It is not unlikely that the version in the album did not have all those changes. There are copies with different covers or printed with a different printing technique.

FE1 is based on a proof copy of GE1 and was corrected by Chopin, who introduced a number of changes. Major changes are: removal of c1 in the L.H. in bar 12 and 36, sustaining c2 in bars 20-21 and adding a grace note in bar 33. Also worth noting is the addition of a wedge in bar 33, confirming the use of two types of staccato signs, i.e. dots and wedges.

The presented copy has a hand-written dedication à Mlle Marie Wodżyńska. FFChopin attached to the cover with glue. It was purchased in 1953 from Teresa Orpiszewska, grand-daughter of Maria Wodzińska.
