Title: Second Concerto
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse Delphine Potocka née de Komar

In GE2 the text of GE1 was thoroughly revised, mainly in comparison with A (A versions have been restored in several places even in those cases when changes in GE1 were probably made by Chopin, e.g. in bar 157224335). The alterations encompassed the pitch and rhythmic text, and predominantly the dynamic and articulation markings, including slurring. Below examples of described revisions divided into groups are presented:

Pitch or rhythm:
  • a few evident defects mentioned in the characterization of GE1 were corrected – bar 46142 and 272143187299-300;
  • a few changes of uncertain authenticity mentioned in the characterization of GE1 were reversed – bar 98280283336;
  • c1 was changed to d1 in bar 220 (unobvious correction of the mistake of A);
  • c2 was added in the chords in bar 266.
Slurring:
Other signs:
  •  was added in bar 12 (at the same time removing the slur),
  •  was moved in bar 60,
  •  sign was added in bar 71121 and 283,
  • accents were added in bars 151 and 153,
  • staccato dots were added in bar 162, and removed in bar 163,
  • staccato dot and an accent were added in bar 174,
  • staccato dot was added at the beginning of bar 219 (and the accent removed),
  • accents in bar 238 and a  in bar 239 were added,
  • staccato dots were added in bar 289.
In the places where due to the rhythmic and textural resemblance of the parts of both hands Chopin marked articulation only in the R.H. (most often staccato dots or slurs), GE2 would generally add articulation markings in the L.H., e.g.:

If in GE1 slurs in the parts of both hands differed, they would be unified in GE2, e.g. in bars 227-228255-256.

GE2 revised the accidentals, adding omitted signs, e.g. in bars 99-100139152-153154-158180241-242, and introducing cautionary ones, e.g. in bar 115143 (probably mistakenly), 316. Some unfounded accidentals were removed, e.g. in bars 1951, 145, 225.

In spite of a very meticulous revision, some mistakes remained unnoticed, e.g.:

  • typesetting the first Tutti in a font of a normal size,
  • erroneous chords in the L.H. at the end of bar 29,
  • c-e third instead of e-g in bar 84,
  • no octave sign at the beginning of bar 181.
  • f3 instead of f2 at the beginning of bar 211,
  • g1 instead of g2 in bar 249,

Edited after Chopin’s death, GE2 does not influence the determination of the text; we discuss versions of this edition only in the most important cases. There are copies of GE2 with different prices on the cover.

Scarce additions made in pencil visible in the presented copy are of no source value.
