c2 in A & GE2

b1 in GE1 (→FEEE)

It is unclear how the version of GE1 (→FEEE) came into being. Two basic possibilities emerge:

  • The change of c2 to b1 corresponds to Chopin's intention and it was introduced by him in the proofreading of GE1, as it can be assumed in the case of the change of the main note of the trill in the previous bar. However, the meaning of those changes is different – the change of the trilled note was only a correction of an erroneous notation, in turn, in the discussed bar we are dealing with an actual change of pitch. According to us, it is highly unlikely, since the c2 crotchet constitutes the most natural continuation of the trill both from the sonic and pianistic points of view. It leads to a second possibility:
  • The change of c2 to b1 is a mistake. It could have been committed by Chopin himself – bar 336 already falls on the next page in GE1, which could have distracted the composer. However, Chopin most probably did not express concerns about the correctly printed text and the change could have been introduced by the engraver, who could have considered that the crotchet in bar 336 is to be at the same pitch as the semibreve in the previous bar, whereas Chopin forgot to mark a change here (the engraver most probably was not aware of the fact that Chopin changed the erroneously written note in the previous bar, and not the sound of the trill). See also the note on the curved line.

Taking into account the above analysis, in the main text we give c2 written in A.
