In FE the indication legato was put between the pentagrams. It is unknown whether such placement complies with Chopin's intention or if it is an inaccuracy in the base's reproduction. After all, it is not of practical importance, as in Chopin's notation signs and indications placed over the R.H. may refer to both hands.

In the main text we give 5 long accents placed between the staves, which corresponds to the unequivocal notation of A1. The notation of GE1 is generally compliant with the above, although it is difficult to say conclusively whether they are short or long accents on the basis of GE1 only; anyway, they are slightly longer than the majority of the accents in the middle section of the Mazurka. The version of the remaining editions, with short accents over the top stave, must be a result of routine revision: the engravers of FE and GE2 reproduced the marks in the same manner, yet independently.

The slur of A clearly has a phrasing function and relates to whole chords, also the progression of the upper voice g1-a1. Relocating it to the side of the note heads, which was one of routine operations performed by engravers, completely changed the sense of that marking.

It is unclear whether the accent in A was supposed to be long or short, according to Chopin. Both FC (→GE) and FE (→EE) interpreted it as short; a short accent is also in FCI (as well as in b. 12). In the main text we also favour a short accent – both the acceleration of the tempo of the Prelude and the shortening of the rhythmic value of this note are an argument for a short, purely dynamic accent.
In FE (→EE) the accent was placed under the stave, which is a routine revision, frequently used by editors both in times of Chopin and nowadays. In this case, it does not influence the meaning of the sign; we do not include this detail in our transcriptions.

Chopin replaced the  written in AI with a long accent in A (→GE1FEEE). In GE2 the sign was replaced with diminuendo hairpins.
