Issues : Placement of markings

b. 21

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

Accent above a1 in A

No mark in FC (→GE) & EE

Accent under b in FE

..

The missing accent in FC (→GE) and EE are oversights of Fontana and of the engraver of EE. The mark having been moved to the side of noteheads in FE, i.e. in this case under the stave, is a frequent, routine revision; thus, the notation was left without a suggestion – certainly intended by Chopin – to accent the a1 note.

b. 22-23

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

No slur in AI

Slur in AF & GE

Tie to a in FE (→EE)

..

Just like in b. 18-19 and 20-21, in the main text we give the slur added to the version prepared for print – AF and [AG] (→GE). The slur in FE (→EE) was placed on the side of the noteheads, which made it look like a tie of a.

b. 23

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

FE (→EE)

..

The portato dots are placed below the notes in FE (→EE). Shifting markings to the head side of notes is one of more frequent engravers' mannerisms in Chopin's times.

b. 25-26

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

We eliminate the unnecessary second "l" in Chopin's abbreviation acceller. (= accelerando) written in A and put in FE. In EE the division of the word accelerando into syllables is probably an editorial revision.

b. 27-28

composition: Op. 25 No 6, Etude in G♯ minor

Slur in in FC, FE, EE & GE2 (→GE3)

No slur in GE1

..

Lack of slur is a patent error of GE1, corrected in GE2 (→GE3). In FE and EE the slur was placed under the notes, which was certainly an arbitrary decision of the engraver – in both editions the stems of the notes are directed upwards, while the slur was routinely moved to the side of note heads.
