Issues : Wedges

b. 4

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Dot and wedge in A

No marks in GE1 (→FEEE)

Dots in both hands in GE2

..

Omission of both staccato signs is certainly a result of distraction of the engraver of GE1 (→FEEE). The omission of the wedge also changed the meaning of the curvy line combining both – the motivic slur transformed into a tie. It was observed only in GE2, yet, despite additions, the version of this edition only partially corresponds to Chopin's intention.

b. 5-37

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

4 wedges in A, probable interpretation

4 dots in A, possible interpretation

3 wedges & dot in FC

2 times 2 dots in FE (→EE)

4 times 2 dots in GE

..

In this context, the markings with which Chopin provided the crotchets in bars 5, 13, 29 and 37 in A may only denote staccato only, although it is not obvious whether he meant wedges or dots, since they clearly differ from dots (e.g. numerous dots extending minims or crotchets), yet their shape also does not bring to mind wedges or even vertical dashes, which could be easily identified with them. Due to that reason, in the main text we also suggest dots, next to wedges, as an alternative solution. In the remaining sources the notation of A was inaccurately reproduced; GE is an exception; in that edition the notation was unified to a form that is absent in those bars both in A and FC.

b. 6

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

A wedge in A

A dot in GE (→FEEE)

..

The staccato mark from A was rendered in GE (→FE>EE) as a dot. In the editors' opinion,  interpreting that mark as a wedge is much more justified, the arguments being its shape (despite its small size it is a line clearly standing out from among the surrounding dots) and the presence of unmistakable wedges in the analogous bars 12, 44, 90, 94 and 96.

b. 6

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

..

In this place, the staccato sign has the form of a short, thin line, differing from the usual dots.  Comparison with analogous places (bars 8, 14, 18 and similar) suggests inaccurate notation of A (uncontrolled hand movement). The same remarks apply to the signs in bars 16 and 23 on the same page.

b. 6

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

..

A distinct staccato wedge in A was reproduced inaccurately as a dot in GE, and omitted in FE (→EE).
