b. 53-56

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

..

In AI, in each of these bars, Chopin wrote a  (cautionary?) to a. The fact that this unnecessary accidental was repeated a few times suggests that the composer was uncertain about the presence of the  raising a in the key signature of the B major/G minor keys. Cf. the Etude in G minor, Op. 25 No. 6, bars 7-8.

b. 55

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

No A in AI

Quaver A in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The version of AI was eventually abandoned when Chopin prepared the Mazurka for print. However, the deletions visible in the manuscript suggest that the latest version (with quavers only) was at the same time the earliest one, since it was this version that Chopin most probably wrote first; only then did he change it to a version with a crotchet on the 2nd beat of the bar.

b. 58-60

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

d in AI, FE2 (→EE) & GE

d in FE1

..

The version of FE1 is almost certainly a mistake by Chopin, which is proven by the compliant version of AI and FE2 (→EE), proofread by Chopin. The mistake was most probably caused by the fact that in [A] the notation with a 5-sharp key signature (as in AI) was replaced with the notation with a 3-sharp key signature. In the discussed four-bar section, kept in the key of C major, it was necessary to add sharps to d and a notes, which Chopin apparently did not do, since these are the accidentals that are missing in FE1 (see also the last note in the next bar).

b. 59

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

A in AI, FE2 (→EE) & GE3

A in FE1 (→GE1GE2)

..

As was the case with d/d in bars 58-60, 62 and 63, the version of FE1 with A on the last quaver in the bar is almost certainly erroneous. Chopin did not include in the notation the necessary  after the change of the key signature in bar 33, which is proven by the compliance of the versions (written down differently) of AI and FE2 (→EE), which was proofread by Chopin. The version of FE1 was repeated in GE1 (→GE2), while the  added in GE3 was most probably drawn from FE2.

In the main text we add a cautionary  to b1, as it was performed in GE3.
