Arpeggio sign in AI

Acciaccatura in FE (→EEW)

Appoggiatura in GE & EEC

Our suggestion

..

Taking into account the fact that in AI each third bar of the thematic eight-bar section (bars 3, 11, 71 and 79) always includes an arpeggio, while in the editions three out of four of these places, it seems almost certain that its absence here in FE resulted from an oversight. Due to the above, we give it directly in the main text.

The change of the short grace note to a long one in GE and EEC is a manner of the engravers of these editions – see the further note in this bar.

Slur to f2-a2 in AI

2 slurs in FE (→GE1,EE)

Slur to c2-e2 in GE2 (→GE3)

..

It is difficult to say whether the shorter slur of AI defines an actual variant of articulation of this motif or – which, according to us, is more likely – whether it is inaccurate or erroneous (e.g. written with bar 81 in mind). The additional, short slur in FE (→GE1,EE) is most probably a mistake, perhaps caused by unclear notation of [A] (e.g. a correction to the rhythm and slurring present in AI two bars later). Its presence next to the longer, undoubtedly correct slur therefore probably resulted from the fact that the engraver did not finish implementing the corrections Chopin introduced while proofreading FE1 (the engraver added the correct slur, but did not remove the erroneous one). The shorter slur was considered erroneous and omitted also in GE2 (→GE3).

Without grace note in AI, FE1 (→GE)

Acciaccatura in FE2 (→EEW)

Appoggiatura in EEC

..

Chopin added the grace note while proofreading FE2 (→EEW), which we introduce to the main text, since it is the latest version of an enhancing nature. The change of the type of grace note in EEC is a manner of the engraver, who did not use a slashed grace note in this Mazurka even once.
