Issues : Authentic corrections of FE
b. 1
|
composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor
..
In A, the pesante marking is written high on the top stave, while its beginning falls over the slur. Such a placement prompted the engraver of FE to put it over the top stave; however, in the stage of proofreading FE1, the indication was moved – probably at Chopin's request – to between the staves, directly over the R.H. part. category imprint: Source & stylistic information issues: Authentic corrections of FE |

b. 4
|
composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor
..
In the main text we omit the additional slur over the triplet entered into A – cf. General Editorial Principles, p. 16. The slur was omitted (removed?) already in FE (→GE,EE). In the next bar, Chopin omitted such a slur already in A. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Authentic corrections of FE , Triplet slurs |

b. 25

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

The mark was added while proofreading FE1, certainly at Chopin's request. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Authentic corrections of FE |

b. 28-30
|
composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor
..
The mark in b. 30 was added while proofreading FE (→GE,EE); there are no reasons to doubt the authenticity of this addition. In the main text we suggest adding an analogous mark in b. 28 as well (in a variant form, in brackets). category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Authentic corrections of FE |

b. 31

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor
..
Chopin would sometimes use double slurs for pairs of L.H. octaves, e.g. in the Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, mov. III, b. 472-480. However, according to us, in the discussed place of the Ballade one can have doubts whether the top slur added by FE resulted from Chopin's proofreading or from a misunderstanding or a mistake of the engraver. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Authentic corrections of FE , FE revisions |
