b. 63

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In FE (→GE,EE), there are no dashes marking the range of calando. Taking into account the fact that they filled only a half of the bar, the inaccuracy does not influence the meaning of the indication. (The traces of corrections in print visible in FE reveal that initially it was smorz. that was printed in the 2nd half of b. 63, hence where the dashes should be. Therefore, the missing dashes most probably resulted from this mistake.)

In A, there is no  to the last L.H. note (a1). The patent inaccuracy was corrected by FE (→GE,EE).

b. 77

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

The version of FE of the R.H. rhythm is wrong – the tied e1 crotchet and the dotted e2 crotchet are placed over the 3rd and 4th L.H. crotchets; in addition, the dot prolonging the e1 minim was removed (one can see traces of it having been removed). Therefore, it is most likely that the reviser (engraver?), confused by the wrong arrangement of notes, adjusted the rhythmic values in the 1st half of the bar to that wrong arrangement. The versions of the remaining sources are correct.

Rests on 6th beat in A

No rests in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In the main text, we give the simplified notation of FE (→GE,EE). It does not seem that the rests were being removed; however, in this case, the strict notation of A constitutes a superfluous graphic complication.

b. 106-109

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A, 8 accidentals are missing: naturals to e in b. 106, e1 in b. 106, 107 and 109, b and b2 in b. 108 and sharps to c3 in b. 107 and f1 in b. 108. FE (→GE1GE2,GE1a) added 5 accidentals, as a result of which it was only the naturals to e1 in b. 107 and 109 and to b2 in b. 108 that were missing. The mark in b. 109 was added by EE, while the one in b. 108 by GE3 (→GE4) and EE3. None of the sources includes the natural to e1 in b. 107.
(Due to the 4th L.H. crotchet in b. 107-108 having been placed on the top stave in A, a  to c1 in b. 107 and a  to b in b. 108 are missing too. In the layout adopted by the editions and in our transcriptions, these accidentals are not necessary.)
