b. 250-260

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

No L.H. slurs in GE1 & FE (→EE)

L.H. slurs in GE2

..

Separate L.H. slurs in b. 250-252 and 258-260 are an arbitrary revision of GE2. One reason for this might be the changes to the original layout performed in that edition, in particular moving the R.H. part fragments written down by Chopin on the bottom stave together with the L.H. part to the top stave. Due to the separation of the parts of both hands, it becomes less intuitive that the slur over the R.H. part applies to both hands (we do not reproduce the layout of GE2 in our transcriptions).

b. 261-265

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

In GE1 the L.H. octaves in b. 261-264 are written down with the use of con 8a. In FE (→EE) it is also the 1st beat of b. 265 that was written down in this way. The abbreviation was expanded only in GE2.

b. 261-263

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

No L.H. slurs in GE1 & FE (→EE)

L.H. slurs in GE2

..

The L.H. slurs, added by GE2, are an arbitrary revision, probably related to the fact that the R.H. part was moved to the top stave (cf. b. 250-260).

tempo di Polacca in GE1 & FE (→EE)

No indication in GE2

..

Omitting the second part of the tempo indication in GE2 could have seemed logical – Tempo I clearly defines the tempo of the returning main polonaise section of the piece. However, we must take into account the fact that at the beginning of the piece there are no indications concerning the tempo and nature of the composition, since it is obvious due to the title, i.e. Polonaise. In the discussed place, however, the title is not visible, which most probably prompted Chopin to specify the tempo.

The sources contain various forms of the conventional Tempo I indication, which we standardise:

  • GE1Tempo 1mo,
  • FETempo 1o,
  • EETempo Io,
  • GE2Tempo I.

We also correct the spelling mistake in the word "Pollacca" (double 'l') in FE. We reproduce the original versions in the graphic transcription (version "transcript"). See also General Editorial Principles, p. 9.

Quaver a1-c2 in GE1 & FE (→EE)

Crotchet a1-c2 in GE2

..

Similarly as in bar 43, splitting the first chord into two parts – this time the upper crotchet comprises the a1-c2 third – is an arbitrary revision of GE2.
