b. 162-163

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

Slur to b1 in GE1 & FE (→EE)

Slur to bar 163 in GE2

..

The slur of the majority of the sources was probably inaccurately written by Chopin in [A]. It could also be the initial version, left by inadvertence, changed in the remaining places at the time of writing [A]. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a longer slur, compliant with all analogous bars (142-143 and 201-202). The slurring of those places was similarly standardised in GE2.

In the main text we add cautionary naturals to the d2-b2 sixth. A natural to b2 was also added in GE2.

b. 190-195

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

6 bars of staccato in GE1

2 bars of staccato in FE

2 staccato dots in EE

No marks in GE2

..

The difference between GE1 and FE in the number of bars featuring staccato markings for the L.H. crotchets does not influence the performance – in both cases the marks serve as a model, and the articulation is valid throughout the entire section until b. 197. To the main text we adopt the more accurate notation of GE1. The reduced number of dots in EE probably resulted from the engraver's inaccuracy, whereas the omission of the marks in GE2 is rather a revision (cf. b. 151-158).

Grace notes in bars 207-208 in GE1 & FE (→GE), contextual interpretation

Grace notes in bar 208 in GE2

..

There are no doubts that the version of GE2 is arbitrary, although it is difficult to say what could have induced the reviser to introduce this change – whether he considered the authentic notation to be wrong, suggesting an improper performance, or whether he considered the change to be of an ordering nature, with no influence on the performance (see the next note).

b. 208

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

There is no accidental to the bottom note of the 2nd grace note (d2) in the sources. This patent inaccuracy was removed only in GE2, in which the first grace note, with a  to the bottom note, was moved to the beginning of b. 208. It could have been the inaccuracies concerning the accidentals of the grace notes that influenced the decision to correct the rhythm too.
