b. 165

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

No markings in GE & EE2 (→EE3)

 in FE (→EE1), literal reading

  in FE, possible interpretation

..

The  mark in FE (→EE1) must be a mistake; however, it is unclear whether the pedalling was supposed to be indicated here but was implemented inaccurately or whether the mark was placed here by mistake. If the former were true, the position of the mark would require a correction, and a  would have to be added – Chopin could have meant here a short pedal, like the one in, e.g. b. 204. According to us, it is, however, the latter that is more likely, hence in the main text we follow GE and do not include this mark. A similar solution was also adopted by EE2 (→EE3).

b. 166-167

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

e1 tied in GE

e1 repeated in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

The authenticity of the tie of GE does not raise major concerns; there could also be a number of reasons for its absence in FE (→EE), e.g. an oversight of the copyist or of the engraver of FE or the tie having been added to [A] after [FC] had already been finished. On the other hand, it is the version of FE, which repeats e, that is compliant with the version of analogous b. 225-226. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a variant solution.

b. 168

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

b2-d3 in FE (→EE) & GE

b2, our alternative suggestion

..

The version suggested as an alternative with respect to the version of the sources is a version reconstructed on the basis of an analysis of the corrections performed by Chopin in this place in a draft of a fragment of the middle section of the Polonaisetempo di Mazourka (AImaz). It is also compliant with the second appearance of this phrase – in b. 227. The missing d3 note, although it seems to be a minor difference, changes, however, the course of the melody, and quite significantly. The version of FE (→EE) and GE could have resulted from Chopin not having finished the corrections or from misunderstandings.

..

We add a cautionary  to d2 in the main text.

b. 169

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

Interval in GE

Chord in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

According to us, neither source nor stylistic criteria allow us to give preference to any of these versions. Due to the above reason, in the main text we suggest a variant solution.
