  b. 204-205

The analysis of the existence of dotted rhythms in the principal rhythmic scheme of the mazurka allows us to divide the entire tempo di Mazourka section into intertwining sections of a different nature. The main thematic thought of this section (b. 127-140 and analog.), not covered by the material included in AImaz, is fairly homogeneous and stable in terms of rhythm:

  • the melodic line is made up of one or two longer values (at least dotted minims) and a mazurka scheme (repeated 9 times) featuring one dotted rhythm , constituting a sequence of upbeat motifs .
  • Chopin did not introduce any rhythmic variations into this theme (except a few grace notes), in spite of it being repeated four times.

The individual occurrences of the theme described above are separated by sections developing the thoughts constituting AImaz. One of their characteristic features is rhythmic diversity, e.g. the use of dotted or even rhythms within similar structures. Below, you can find a list of places in which differences in this respect appear, both between the versions of particular sources and the analogous places of the final version.

  • B. 141, 143, 200 and 202. A dotted rhythm is only on the 1st beat of b. 202 in AImaz, introduced as a correction instead of two quavers. In the final version, Chopin did not include that change, as a result of which all places feature equal values.
  • B. 161, 163, 220 and 222. A dotted rhythm is on the 1st beat of b. 222 in all sources, including AImaz.
  • B. 145-146 and 204-205. Out of three dotted rhythms present in AImaz in b. 204-205 –  in b. 204 and on the 2nd beat of b. 205 in the final version, it is only the former that survived, in b. 145.
  • On the 1st beat of b. 165-168 and 224-227 the final version features 4 dotted rhythms the first time and 2 dotted and 2 even the second time, alternating. AImaz contains yet another arrangement – 3 bars of alternating rhythms, yet with a dotted rhythm in the last one.
  • Between b. 171-172, 175-176, 230-231 and 234-235 in the final version there are 2 dotted rhythms; however, the one at the end of b. 234 was introduced only just in the stage of proofreading of FE1 – it is absent in GE. It is also absent in AImaz, in which in these places it is even values that prevail – the only dotted rhythm appears at the end of b. 230.
  • The final version includes equal values on the 3rd beat of b. 179 and on the 1st beat of b. 180, yet the second time (b. 238-239) both places feature dotted rhythms, also in AImaz.
  • In b. 182-184 dotted rhythms are only on the 1st beat of b. 182 and on the 2nd and 3rd beats of b. 183 (); in AImaz the situation looks similar. The 2nd time each of b. 241-243 include the same rhythm .
