Slurs from E to g in GE1 (contextual interpretation) & FE (→EE)

Slurs from F1 to a in GE2

Slurs from E to a, our alternative suggestion

The starting point of the slurs encompassing the small quaver sequences is unclear in GE1. Out of 8 slurs (here and in b. 294-297) five begin clearly on the 1st octave in the bar, whereby only in b. 61 the slur runs from the bottom note of the octave; the remaining ones begin more or less halfway between the bottom and top notes. The three remaining slurs, in b. 64, 296 and 297, begin slightly further, hence it seems that they combine with the 1st small quaver. According to us, that notation may quite accurately reflect the notation of [A], which, however, taking into account the Chopinesque manner of writing slurs, can be undoubtedly interpreted as slurs running from E. As such slurs (of that range) are also in FE (→EE), yet precisely written down, we give them in the main text. A justification for the longer slurs of our alternative suggestion is a substantial likelihood that the notation of the manuscripts, perhaps ambiguous, could have been misinterpreted by the engravers – differentiating between the two versions of the endings of the slurs would have been almost certainly problematic in [A].
The slurs of GE2 are an arbitrary and almost certainly wrong revision of the publisher.
