GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: IX 1839
Plate number: 6088
Title: Vingt-quatre Préludes
Dedication: Son ami J. C. Kessler

GE1 is based on FC, Chopin took no part in its preparation. In the entire Op. 28 GE1 contains many adjustments and errors – see Prelude in no. 1. There are copies of GE1 which have differing covers, and the edition was also published in a version of 4 fascicules containing 6 preludes each.

In this Prelude accidentals were supplemented, e.g. in b. 18, 35, 36.

The more obvious flaws of GE1 include:

  • pitch mistakes, e.g. a1 instead of b1 in b. 5e1 instead of f1 in b. 23, instead of in b. 26c4 instead of d4 in b. 36e (e?) instead of g in b. 42.
  • oversights, e.g. accent in b. 18, pedal markings in b. 28-29.
