b. 36

composition: Op. 28 No. 24, Prelude in D minor

..

The pairs of sharps raising d2(3)-f2(3) to d2(3)-f2(3) are missing in the 2nd half of the passage in A (→FC,FE). (The mark before the last quaver is also missing, which we discuss separately – see the next note). The inaccuracy, generally typical of Chopin, and particularly of the Preludes, was corrected in GE and EE.

b. 41-42

composition: Op. 28 No. 24, Prelude in D minor

in A (→FEEE) & contextual interpretation of FC

   in GE

..

Fontana omitted the  mark at the beginning of b. 41 in FC, leaving a lonely  asterisk at the end of b. 42. GE completed the pedalling; however, in the face of varied L.H. figures in these bars, a separate pedal was added in each of them. The crossing-out of the  mark at the end of b. 41, visible in A, proves that Chopin consciously combined them with pedal. Crossings-out of those marks in similar situations are also present at the end of b. 9, 20 and 54.

cresc. - -stretto in A, literal reading

cresc. - -stretto in FC

cresc.stretto in FE (→EE)

cresc. - - , stretto in GE

cresc. - -stretto in A, contextual interpretation

..

In A certain verbal indications seem to be inaccurately written here: dashes marking the range of cresc. not reaching the  mark, the stretto indication beginning in the middle of the semiquaver septuplet in spite of it concerning the quaver phrase in b. 61-63 or the culminant  mark placed over the R.H. part, although it almost certainly applies to both hands. Taking into account the above, in the main text we suggest a compromise contextual interpretation of the notation of A. The other variants we consider fully legitimate are: the notation of A (interpreted literally), the version of FC (which can be considered an accurate interpretation of A) and the text of GE (with reservations). The inauthentic changes and inaccuracies in FE (→EE) distort Chopin's intention to a certain extent.
