The E note in the last bar of the Prelude must be a mistake. It stems from an inaccurate notation of A, in which the intersection point between the stem of the L.H. chord and the 1st ledger line looks like a note. In addition, three bottom ties concerning the passage in b. 33 are written at the pitches of C, E and G, which is a mistake confirmed by the presence of E in b. 34. In the main text we give the version of FC (→GE), undoubtedly intended by Chopin and correctly unravelled by Fontana.

In the main text we keep the pedalling notation without the final  mark, quite frequent in Chopin's pieces (cf., e.g. the Nocturne in D Major, Op. 27 No. 2, b. 74-77). The marks added in GE and EE cannot be authentic.

In the main text we include the revision of FE (→EE), since there are no doubts that the part of the chord falling on the L.H. is supposed to last as long as the one falling on the R.H. Chopin was not consistent in this respect; sometimes he would write one, sometimes two fermatas, which does not influence the performance in similar contexts (cf., e.g. Preludes Nos. 1-3 featuring one fermata, but Nos. 4 and 8 – two). In the main text we keep the notation with one fermata only in the cases when an entire chord is written on one stave, e.g. in the Prelude No. 2 in A Minor.
