The entire middle section of the Mazurka is devoid of pedalling markings in A1. Chopin added them in the proofreading of FE (b. 63, 74, 76 and 79) and in [A2] or in the proofreading of GE1 (b. 68, 72, 74 and 76). Despite the fact that each of those sets constitutes a logical whole that could suggest the performer a sonically nuanced performance of that section, Chopin's aim could have been to ensure that the bass note be audible where it is impossible to hold it with hand (b. 63, 76 and 79) or where such a hold could have been hampered due to the span of the chords (b. 68, 72 and 74). From this perspective, the markings complement each other, hence in the main text we include all of them. On the other hand, it cannot be ruled out that the markings in b. 63 and 79, added in FE together with the tie of A
, describe a certain performance manner of this place, alternative to the version featured in GE, without those elements, but with arpeggios at the beginning of b. 63. Taking into account the above, we give the pedalling of FE (as well as the aforementioned tie) in brackets, to emphasise its distinct source status.
