Chopin added a  both in [A2] (→GE) and in the proofreading of FE; however, the range of the marks differs significantly: the mark in FE emphasises chiefly the very culminant chord, whereas the hairpin of GE creates a slightly further plane of escalation. In the main text we follow the principal source, i.e. GE, yet we consider the latest version of FE to be an equal variant. There is a similar situation in b. 67-68.

Staccato dot in FE

The staccato dot was most probably added by Chopin in the last stage of proofreading of FE, since it is absent in EE. The absence of the mark in GE may be explained by an oversight of the engraver or even of Chopin in [A2], hence we include the dot in the main text. See also b. 21.

According to us, the slur of A1 in b. 27-28, coinciding with the next one on the minim in b. 28, is one of a few inaccuracies of notation of slurs in the sources concerning this Mazurka. The suggested interpretation is based on the assumption that the slurs of A1 generally describe the same performance manner as the slur and the staccato dot used in [A2] (→GE1). In other words, Chopin was certain of the performance concept of that phrase, he was just looking for the best way to write it down.
EE most probably convey the version of FE1 prior to the final stage of Chopin's proofreading, while the slur of GE is affected by a similar inaccuracy as the notation of A1.
