b. 78

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

g in A1 (→FE1EE) & GE

G in FE2

..

The version of FE2 must be the latest authentic one and should be placed in the main text as such. However, the fact that the version had a very limited number of recipients is an argument against it: FE2 was released in a commemorative album, offered exclusively to the subscribers of the weekly Revue et Gazette Musicale de Paris. Therefore, this situation can be compared to the variations entered by Chopin into teaching copies, which we generally consider to be variant.

Dotted rhythm in A1 (→FEEE)

Quavers in GE

..

The quavers in the L.H. top voice might be a mistake of GE, since due to the parallel movement, the voices are not independent. In the entire Mazurka a similar combination of L.H. quavers with R.H. dotted rhythm appears only twice, in b. 47 and 54. In both cases the voices co-create the polyphonising texture and are clearly independent.

The cautionary naturals before g and g1 were added – perhaps by Chopin – in the proofreading of FE1 (→EE).

No ornament in FE (→EE)

& [] suggested by the editors

..

The missing mordent in FE (→EE) must be a mistake of the engraver. In the main text we add a  over the ornament, specifying the use of c2, and not of c2, as the top note. Chopin would often omit such marks and, according to us, such an inaccuracy is much more likely here than a 'default' use of c2. However, the literal interpretation – featuring c– certainly does not disturb the sonic atmosphere of this fragment of the Mazurka.
