b. 82

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

b1 in A1 (→FE)

b1 in GE & EE

..

It is difficult to determine Chopin's final intention here. The authenticity of both versions is likely yet not absolutely certain: Chopin could have committed a mistake while writing a  before b1 in A1, while the  in GE1, inserted in print instead of a , could have been a result of Chopin's proofreading but also of the reviser's work, as EE show. In the main text we adopt the musically most natural version of the principal source (GE1); in turn, we consider the version of A1 (→FE) to be an equal variant.

b. 82-83

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

2 slurs, first to c2, in A1 (literal reading→FE)

2 slurs, first to d2, in A1 (contextual interpretation) & EE

Continuous slur in GE

..

The slur of A1 ending on the c1-c2 octave is almost certainly an inaccuracy (perhaps due to ink stoppage?); repeated in FE. In GE the slur encompasses the entire four-bar section (b. 81-84). In the main text we give the contextual interpretation of the version of A1, which was also introduced in EE.

b. 84-85

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

d tied in A1 & GE

repeated in FE (→EE)

..

The reason for the omission of the tie of d by FE (→EE) could have been the deletions of A1 at the beginning of b. 85. The fragment of the slur falling on that bar was deleted, and Chopin did not repeat that fragment on the rewritten – on a staff below – 1st beat of the bar.

b. 84

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

Inverted long accent in A1, probably interpretation

Long accent in FE

in GE

No mark in EE

..

The mark of A1, with arms of different length, may be interpreted as a reversed long accent or a short  hairpin, which would correspond to the version of GE. According to us, the former is more likely; however, in the main text we adopt a non-reversed long accent, which may be a result of Chopinesque proofreading of FE and which is compliant with the unquestionable marking in analogous b. 76.

b. 85

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

Slur from semiquaver in A1 (→FEEE)

Slur from 2nd beat in GE

..

The beginning of the slur of GE must be considered inaccurate, even if it had been written so in [A2]. Such an interpretation is supported by the slur of A1 in that bar and by the compliant slurs of all sources in analogous b. 77.
