b. 450

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

b2 in A & EE

a2 in FC (→GE) & FE

..

The version of A is the original one, left by inadvertence: in an analogous situation, eight bars earlier, Chopin changed b2 to a2, and in the discussed bar he introduced an identical change in FC and FE. In the case of FE the change was introduced in the last phase of proofreading, not included in EE.

b. 497-498

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur in bar 497 in A (→FC,FEEE)

Slur to bar 498 in GE

..

The slur of A (→FC,FEEE) must be inaccurate, which is proven by:

  • a comparison with almost all analogous motifs in this section (except for b. 507-508);
  • the traces of prolonging the slurs, visible in A, initially also encompassing only 2 crotchets – cf. b. 495-496, 501-502, 503-504 and 513-514).

There is a similar situation in b. 507-508.

b. 498-499

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In A there are visible crossings-out on the 3rd beat of these bars. In both places it was probably the original version of those crotchets, i.e. the d-g fourth.

b. 521-522

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

The crossings-out visible in A allow us to reconstruct the previous version of the 2nd and 4th chords: . The textural affinity with the motifs in b. 516-518 allows us to assume that it was the original version.

b. 524-525

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

The mark crossed out in A on the 2nd beat of bar 524 is most probably a crotchet rest. It means that initially the L.H. part was the same as in b. 516 (except for the enharmonic difference in the notation).
We were not able to determine what the crossing-out in a similar place in b. 525 concerned. In turn, it seems that the dots extending the b-b1 crotchet and the quaver flag of the first g-e1 sixth could have been added later, which is indicated by the spaces between the notes.
