Verbal indications
b. 492

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

The missing in FE (→EE) is most probably an oversight of the engraver. See also the note in the next bar. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE |

b. 528-539
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
Chopin added a 12-bar crescendo both in FC (→GE) and FE (→EE). In the main text we reproduce the notation of FC, in which the word cresc. appears in b. 528 slightly earlier (anyway, in the case of such a long dynamic change it does not actually matter). b. 540
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
Chopin initially wrote a in FC and then deleted it, probably replacing it with an accent. However, in the proofreading of FE, which must have been performed later, he used that indication again. Since we generally draw the Scherzo's performance indications from FC, which is most carefully developed by Chopin in this regard, we do not include that in the main text. However, taking into account the fact that Chopin would frequently use a combination of and an accent, we consider it to be possible to add that indication (in a variant form) to the accents adopted in the main text. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Chopin's hesitations |

b. 544
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
There is no doubt that it was Chopin that added the indication sempre in FE. To the main text we adopt a slightly differently formulated indication added by Chopin in FC (sempre con fuoco), hence we give the indication added in FE, although the latest, in the form of a variant addition. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Authentic corrections of FE |

In the main text we include the indication added by Chopin in FC, which is our principal source due to its most careful preparation. See also the note below. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Authentic corrections of FC |
