b. 26-27

A more probable interpretation of the slur of A (→GE)

The end of the slur in A was written ambiguously and may be interpreted in two ways. In GE it was decided that the slur reaches a flat1 at the beginning of bar 27, which we find to be a more plausible interpretation.

Chopin's correction of FE related to the beginning of the slur in question – in phrasing, Chopin linked the return of the 1st theme with the introductory motif. That correction, linking the end of the slur from bar 25 with the beginning of the discussed slur in bar 26, may be considered to also confirm the correctness of deciphering the end of the latter slur. We think this allows one to resolve doubts caused by imprecise notation of that detail in A also at the beginning of the Nocturne and in bars 46-47.
