Despite the lack of accidentals before the 4th, 11th and 16th note in the second half of the bar, the text of A is clear: first c3, and then c flat4 twice. In this situation the added in GE1 before the last one of those seems strange. In our opinion, that sign indicates that GE1 was written in several stages: the flat was placed when the 3rd note of the bar still had an erroneous (later changed to ). Later changes made both in the proofing of FE (→EE) and in GE2 – the addition of before c3 and moving before the first one of the two c flat4 – do not change the actual sounds but make the chromatic notation more precise and facilitate its reading.
