Issues : Errors in FE

b. 414

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

..

In FE (→EE1), there is no accidental before the 4th semiquaver, which results in d3 both on the 4th and the 6th semiquavers. Due to the C major key (A minor) valid from the middle of bar 412, it must be considered a mistake, probably repeated after [A]. The necessary  lowering d3 to d3 was added in GE and EE2 (→EE3).

Slur to e2 in FE (→GE)

Longer slur suggested by the editors

..

In FE (→GE,EE), the slur ends on the last note of bar 419, together with the great stave. We consider it to be a mistake of the engraver caused by transition into a new line (just like in the case of the crescendo dashes), since breaking a slur in such a place is completely musically unjustified (continuation of the phrase), and we suggest one long slur until bar 424.

c2-es2 third in FE (→GE1,EE)

c2 & e2 in GE2

e suggested by the editors

..

In the editors' opinion, the c2-e2 third in FE (→GE1,EE) is most probably a mistake of the so-called "partial proofreading" – while proofreading the erroneous c2, the engraver added the correct note (e2) but did not remove the erroneous c2. The arbitrary version of GE2 makes it possible to avoid an unjustified pianistic complication. However, it is highly unlikely that it could have corresponded to Chopin's intention.

In the main text, we add a  sign, possibly overlooked by the engraver of FE (→GE). It was also added by the reviser of EE.

Tie to a1, contextual interpretation of FE

No slur/tie in GE

..

According to us, the slur of FE (→EE), additionally separating a group of two notes from a three-note motif, is a result of an erroneous interpretation of the tie of a1. (FE and EE differ in the arrangement of the noteheads constituting the a1-b1 second; as a result, the discussed slur of FE seems to be reaching b1, whereas in EE – a1.)
