b. 33

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

Slur from 2nd note in FE (→EE)

Slur from 1st note in GE

..

An earlier beginning of the slur in GE is most probably an inaccuracy of the engraver.

The hairpin of FE (→GE,EE) starts from the middle of the bar (in GE, the engraver also overlooked the cresc. indication). We consider it to be a possible inaccuracy of the engraver or an imprecise nature of Chopin's notation and we suggest a mark beginning slightly earlier like in similar bar 31.

b. 33

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

e1-g1 third in FE (→GE,EE)

Chord suggested by the editors

..

The missing b on the 3rd semiquaver on the 2nd beat of the bar is probably an oversight of the engraver. It is indicated by:

  • the use of triads in all three pianistically analogous situations – on the 2nd and 4th beats of bar 31 and on the 4th beat of bar 33;
  • an important factor favouring a mistake – the note, if it was present in [A], was most probably written on the bottom stave, hence separated from the e1-gthird. Such situations would sometimes cause a note being overlooked while reproducing the manuscript – cf. e.g. the Sonata in B Minor, Op. 35, 1st mov., bar 3.

Due to this reason, we suggest adding that note in the main text.

The sources repeated flats before D and d on the 3rd and 4th semiquavers on the 2nd beat of the bar. We omit them in the main text.

The missing cresc. indication within the  mark must be a mistake of GE. However, it was not necessarily an oversight; the notation of FE could have been considered to be unnecessarily complicated or awkward.
