c1 in FE (→EE), contextual interpretation

No c1, editors' suggestion

FE (→EE) contain an additional quaver in the chord at the beginning of bar 93, which, when interpreted literally, would be a c1, which, together with the following d1, results in an inconceivable sequence in this harmonic context. There are three possible ways of reproducing the version intended by Chopin:

  • adding a  before this note. It is the simplest solution, assuming an oversight of an accidental, so frequent in Chopin's pieces, hence this is the version we consider to be the text of FE (→EE);
  • adding a tie to this note in the previous bar. This is the solution adopted in GE, in which the curved line encompassing the bass sequence in bars 92-93 in FE was reproduced as a tie of c1 – see the previous note;
  • removing the erroneous note, which is indicated by comparison with analogous bars 95, 245 and 247. Difficulties in interpreting [A] (e.g. due to crossings-out) or a Terzverschreibung, partly corrected (the correct note was added, probably a, but the erroneous one was not removed – cf. e.g. the Polonaise in B Major, WN 17, bar 15 or the Concerto in F Minor, Op. 21, 3rd mov., bar 282), could be indicated as possible causes of the mistake.

According to us, it is the third possibility that is most likely, and we suggest it in the main text.
