b1 in FE (→GE) & EE2

a1 in EE1

..

EE1 features the initial version of the 6th semiquaver, changed in the penultimate stage of proofreading of FE (→GE). The changes of the correction performed on the plate are clearly visible in FE. In addition, the changed note (b1) was provided with a cautionary , which we omit in the main text, since it is superfluous in this context. The accidental was also removed in GE; it is also absent in EE2, in which the corrected note was introduced probably on the basis of GE1.

b. 131-132

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

dim. in bar 132 in FE (→GE)

dim. in bar 131 in EE

..

The fact that dim. appears earlier is probably the initial version of this fragment's dynamics, changed by Chopin in the penultimate stage of proofreading of FE (→GE). In addition to moving this indication, Chopin probably added a long accent at the beginning of b. 132, emphasising the moment from which the diminuendo should begin.

Long accent in FE

in GE

No mark in EE

..

A long accent could have been added in the penultimate stage of proofreading of FE; it is indicated by the absence of the mark in EE along with the shift of dim. – see the previous note. In GE the mark was almost certainly erroneously interpreted as a  hairpin.

Mordent in FE

No ornament in GE & EE

..

The absence of a mordent both in EE and GE suggests that we are dealing with an oversight of the engraver of FE, which made its way to these editions; however, in FE it was corrected in the last stage of proofreading. In the main text we add an accidental – often omitted by Chopin in such situations – specifying the pitch of the mordent's top note.
