Slurs

b. 74

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

2 slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

1 slur suggested by the editors

..

The change of the slurring scheme, which distorts the natural pianistic gesture, is inconceivable in such a virtuoso sequence. Due to this reason, in the main text we correct the undoubtedly erroneous slurs of the sources. A similar situation can be found in b. 218.

b. 75-76

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

..

In FE (→GE) the slur started in b. 75, the last on the page, has no ending in b. 76. The inaccuracy was corrected in EE.

b. 78-79

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

2 slurs in FE (→GE1)

3 slurs in EE & GE2 (→GE3)

2 slurs suggested by the editors

..

The slurs combining the bass octaves at the transition between b. 78 and 79 are marked inaccurately in FE – in b. 78, which closes the page, there is only the slur that runs from d, whereas in b. 79 there are 2 slurs on the bottom stave, reaching c and C. Therefore, it is highly likely that, like the motifs in b. 77 and 81, Chopin marked the discussed pair with two slurs between the parts of both hands. In the main text we move these slurs outside the text, which seems to be clearer. EE and GE2 (→GE3) also considered that Chopin's notation required a change – a slur was added between the topmost notes of the octaves, on the top stave.

b. 78

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

..

Due to the graphic retouches performed in this fragment of the page, GE1a overlooked the slurs over the last two pairs of octaves in the ascending L.H. sequence. See the description of this impression.

b. 82-83

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

No slurs in FE (→GE)

3 slurs in EE

2 slurs suggested by the editors

..

In the context of b. 78-79, the missing slurs in FE (→GE) must be an inaccuracy of the engraver of FE or of Chopin himself. In the main text we suggest adding them in the form adopted 4 bars earlier. The slurs were also added in EE
