composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Staccato dot in A & GE2

No marks in GE1 (→FEEE)

Staccato dots suggested by the editors

..

It is hard to ascertain whether the staccato dot at the beginning of bar 54 was overlooked by the engraver or deleted as part of a revision (Chopin's correction?) comprising also a change in slurring of bars 54-56. In the main text we maintain the notation of A and suggest analogous articulation – staccato dots – for the identical pair of chords a bar later. Similarly in bars 57-59.

Long accent in A

 in GE1 (→FEEE)

Short accent in GE2

..

The sign in A is undoubtedly a long accent on the 2nd beat of the bar, although due to the crossing-out in the part of the R.H., its relation to the corrected chord partly disappeared. It was most probably the reason for the erroneous reproduction of the sign in GE1 (→FEEE) as a whole-bar  hairpin. GE2 deciphered the sign's function correctly, but not the kind of the used accent.

Accents in A

Rests & accents in GE2

..

The accents, this time placed in A over the cminims, were most probably overlooked in GE1 (→FEEE) (however, it cannot be excluded that the engraver omitted them while he was uncertain what they meant – e.g. if he was expecting rests in this place, he could have considered them quaver rests, which did not fit in with the remaining elements of the notation). GE2 precisely repeated the notation of bars 53-54 (see also the note on articulation in bars 57-59).

Long accent in A

 in GE1

 in FE

 in EE & GE2

..

The sign in A is a typical long accent. In GE1 it was moved to the end of the triplet, so it is unknown which note it concerns (the engraver most probably considered it a  hairpin). In the remaining editions, the placement and size of the sign were subject to further arbitrary changes although the notations of EE and GE2 are generally similar to the notation of A.

b. 68

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

EE erroneously omitted the staccato dot over the 2nd crotchet in the bar. Since the dot in FE is copied poorly, it could have been assumed that it was to be removed (the dot's "debilitation" is most probably a result of the proofreading of pitch).
