GE1a
compare
b. 17
In the main text we give the slur of A (and GE2) whose authenticity remains beyond any doubt. Two slurs of GE1 (→FE→EE) may, however, also be authentic:
- it is exactly the slurring Chopin wrote at the repetition of this phrase in bars 85-86;
- the change does not correspond to the schemes most frequently applied by the engraver of GE1: the division of the slur is not compliant with the basic metric structure (bars or halves of bars).
There are also arguments against:
- on the copies of GE1 available to us (including GE1a) there are no visible traces of performing changes in print, possible Chopin corrections could be introduced only in this form;
- GE1 did not correctly reproduce slurs in any of four similar phrases (bars 15-16, 17-18, 83-84 and 85-86); it produced reasonable results only in the discussed case.
