Slur from 2nd note in A (→GE1)

Slur from 1st note in FE (→EE) & GE2

The range of the slur over the 2nd half of the bar in A is uncertain:

  • the slur starts from the 2nd (or even 3rd) semiquaver, yet its shape suggests its beginning from the 1st note (d1);
  • the end of the slur clearly indicates continuation in the next bar (on a new page of the manuscript), where, however, no ending of the slur is to be found. Chopin either drew the discussed slur inaccurately, too far, or he forgot about the ending of the slur in bar 66.

Each of four combinations of the above interpretation possibilities may be considered to be musically justified, hence the choice of one of them must be subjective. In GE1 the beginning of the slur is also unclear, whereas in the remaining editions the slur embraces the entire group of semiquavers (in EE and GE2 a corresponding slur for the L.H. was also added).
We assume that in A and GE1 the slur starts from the 2nd semiquaver and this is the version we give in the main text.
