Slurs from d2 in A

Slurs from a1 in GE

Slurs from f2 in FE (→EE)

Our alternative suggestion

..

In the main text we give the slurs of A, since the changes appearing in GE and FE (→EE) are almost certainly a result of a routine, schematic interpretation of slurs by the engraver of GE1 and inaccuracies of FE.

The alternative interpretation of the slur beginning in bar 212 suggested by us comes from an observation that in A the beginning of the slur falls over a deleted note, probably f2, which may mean that after having performed the correction, Chopin did not control the correctness of the slurring.

Slur to bar 213 in A & contextual interpretation of FE (→EE)

Slur only in bar 212 in GE

..

In spite of the clear extended slur of A, in GE the slur does not end on the last note in bar 212, which certainly does not correspond to Chopin's intention. FE (→EE) repeated the slur of GE in bar 212 (the last on the page), yet in bar 213, on a new page, a slur reaching the minim was added, as if it were an ending of the previous slur. The added slur is probably a Chopin one, and the ambiguity of notation is a result of a careless implementation of the proofreading, hence we assume that the slurs designate one slur, as in A.

b. 215-216

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slurs in A (→GE1)

Slurs in FE (→EE)

Slurs in GE2

..

Shortening the slur at the end of bar 215 is a result of an inaccurate interpretation of GE1 by the engraver of FE (→EE). Interestingly, the reviser of GE2 not only introduced a similar change, but he also moved the beginning of the next slur, probably considering this type of a hidden coincidence of slurs to be illogical, hence – erroneous.

Subsequent shortenings of the  sign in GE and FE (→EE) are certainly accidental. In the main text we reproduce the notation of A.

Slurs in A

Slurs in GE1

Slurs in FE (→EE)

Slur in GE2

..

In the main text we give the slurs of A, since the changes of their range and placement are introduced in the editions almost certainly inauthentically:

  • In GE1 one slur embraces almost an entire bar and it was probably meant to combine both Chopin slurs. At the same time, the clearly marked in A ending of the slur on the d3 minim in the next bar was ignored. The slur over the group of grace notes was moved under the notes and it was printed so inaccurately that it practically combines the c2 and fcrotchets.
  • The slurs were then repeated in FE (→EE) with further, minor shifts, also certainly arbitrary.
  • In GE2 the slur under the group of grace notes was removed, whereas the top slur was extended to the next bar (in accordance with A).
