Slurs

b. 321-322

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Two-bar slur in A, interpretation suggested by the editors

2 one-bar slurs in A (possible interpretation→GEFEEE)

..

In A bar 321 is the last one on the page, which became the cause of the ambiguous notation of the slurs in the R.H. – the slur in bar 322 (on a new page) suggests a continuation from the previous bar, which is not confirmed by the ending of the slur in bar 321. In the main text we assume that Chopin's intention was a two-bar slur, yet the version of the editions, with two one-bar slurs, can also be considered a justified interpretation of A.

b. 325-327

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur in A, literal reading

Slur in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

No slur in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In A bar 325 is the last one on the page. The slur in the L.H. clearly suggests a continuation (similarly as the slur in the R.H.), which, however, is absent on a new page (in bar 326). In GE1 (→FEEE) the slur was completely overlooked, whereas in GE2 the slur of A together with the overlooked ending was restored. Since this is how Chopin's intention undoubtedly looked like, in this case in the main text we include the slur of GE2.

b. 326-327

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur in A, literal reading

Slur in A (contextual interpretation→GEFEEE)

..

When interpreted literally, the slur of A does not exceed bar 326. However, its shape suggests leading it to the beginning of bar 327, which is confirmed by the corrected – most probably by Chopin – slur of GE (→FEEE).

b. 327

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

No L.H. slur in A (→GE1FEEE)

Slur in GE2

..

The slur of GE2 was probably added due to the slur in the previous bars.

b. 328-329

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Continued slur in A

New slur in GE

No slur in FE

New slur in EE

..

The division of the slur in GE (→FE), as a result of which the 2nd half in bar 328 is not embraced with a slur at all, is undoubtedly a mistake of the engraver of GE1. The version of FE – without a slur in bar 329 – can be interpreted as an oversight of FE or as a notation of the state of GE1 from before the final retouch. In the second case, the slur of GE1 in bar 329 would be an inaccurate attempt to alleviate the consequences of omission of the final one-and-a-half-bar fragment of the slur. A suitable completion of the slur, this time accurate, was introduced in EE. See also the note on the slur in the L.H.
