Issues : Accidentals in different octaves

b. 114

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

In A (→GE) a  is missing before the 8th semiquaver in the L.H. (d1). In turn, Chopin repeated a  before bin the L.H. at the end of the bar. FE removed the second sign, yet did not add the first one. EE includes the fully correct notation.

f2 in A (literal reading→GE1FE)

f2 in A (contextual interpretation) & EE

f2 in GE2

..

Before the penultimate note in A (→GE1FE) there is no accidental specifying whether it is to be f2, in accordance with the figuration's logic, or f2, in accordance with the orthographic rules. In this kind of figures, transferred by an octave, Chopin would often omit repetitions of accidentals, considering them to be obvious. The fact that he heard fhere is proved by cautionary naturals before the f1-foctave in the next bar, added in the proofreading of FE (→EE), most probably by Chopin. In this situation, in the main text we adopt the version with f2. It is also in EE, in which a  was probably added after having taken into account cautionary naturals (cf. bar 171). GE2 opted for the version with f2, adding a  before it.

None of the sources includes the correct notation of accidentals, although omissions do not impede the interpretation. In A there is no  raising d1 to don the 4th quaver (it is also absent before the 7th quaver) and d2 to dat the end of the group of demisemiquavers. In GE (→FE) the last sign was added and a  before on the 6th quaver was repeated, whereas GE2 removed the superfluous  before the second b2. EE is closest to the correct notation, in which the only inaccuracy, perhaps resulting from a different approach to such situations, is a missing  before don the 7th quaver – a  already appeared in this bar before a note at this pitch, yet in another clef (on the 4th quaver).

In A (→GEFE) there is no  raising d2 to d2. The patent inaccuracy was corrected in EE, adding also a cautionary  before c2.

In the majority of the sources, the  raising d2 to dis not before the note but 7 notes earlier, before dwritten at the same pitch, which in that time was generally considered to be enough. Strictly speaking, the sign is not necessary there at all, since dwritten at the pitch of dis already on the 4th note of the roulade – this observation most probably made the reviser of GE2 remove the sign before the second d3.
