Alternative interpretation of A

 in GE (→FE)

 in EE

..

In the main text, we reproduce the range and placement of the  hairpin after A. In the editions, the sign was moved to between the staves, which, in this case, may, according to us, impede its correct interpretation. Placed like accents, over the melody, it seems to perform a similar function (as if of very long accents), emphasising the dynamic relationship between the suspension of eand its resolution, d2. Taking that into account, we regard the notation of bar 170 as clearer and we suggest a version with unified signs after bar 170 as an alternative solution.

Dashes up to last chord in A

No dashes in GE (→FEEE)

..

Leading crescendo to  in bar 173 seems to be natural, hence in the main text we suggest adding dashes marking the range of this dynamic change. The absence of dashes in the editions is probably a result of an oversight of the engraver of GE1.

b. 174

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In A (→GE1FE) there is no  before F1. The sign was added in EE, whereas in GE2 sharps were added before both notes of the octave.

Slur to bar 176 in A & GE2

Slur in bar 175 in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

Shortening the slur in GE1 (→FEEE) is almost certainly a characteristic inaccuracy of the engraver of GE1. The slur of A was restored in GE2.

cresc. in GE (→FEEE)

..

In the main text we give crescendo after A, divided into syllables and extended over one and a half bars. Replacing this notation in GE (→FEEE) with a conventional cresc. abbreviation certainly does not come from Chopin.
